Oh Captain My Captain - Recklessly She Split The Sea. Releases November 10th, 2008Annie Marie, the second track, first song on Oh Captain My Captain's, "Recklessly She Split The Sea", interrupts a cheesy intro, that couldn't be any worse if they had called it "Opening Credits"; oh wait, they did.. Annie Marie is a sad pathetic song about a wimp.. It describes a girl that cheats on a boy and of course he's devastated.

Hello friends,As you may know, White Fang is planning to tour the U.S. next month.. We were relying on the sale of Kyle’s car, a 2000 Chevrolet Cavalier, in order to purchase a van.Unfortunately, today we were leaving a jam session and the worst thing that could ever happen, did indeed happen.Kyle, thinking that his car was in reverse, pushed on the gas sending the front of the car straight into the truck parked in front of us.. The truck is fine, but Kyle’s car is now, basically, totaled. The hood is smashed and the radiator is busted.. So is the left headlight. Now, not only do we not have a way to get a van, but we are not going to have almost any money for tour.

A Paper Cup Band 01/23 @ Random House PartyThis Minneapolis trio really knows how to kill the party and alienate the sorrostitutes that have never expanded their musical vocabulary beyond Cyndi Lauper and Madonna; good.. However, if you're cool enough to wait the three minute set up time with out making stinkface - you're in money because A Paper Cup Band bring a whole other level of party.. These acoustic anarcho-jug band stylee (you describe them?) guys were tossed last minute into a fashion dance party and pulled it off fluid.. The whole house was stompin' and shakin, booties were bouncing all over the living room.

This show was weird.. It was at the Roseland, where I had heard you couldnt bring in cameras, especially "professional" ones (ie anything that has a detachable lens). So I ended up getting a 'photo pass' from the really nice guys in the band Past Lives, who I had seen before, and were the opening band that night.. This meant that I got to go in this little like 4 ft. section between the crowd and the stage that was roped off, and take pictures, with my 'photo pass'.. Of course, the stage is like 5 ft. tall, and the bands are really far away, and the 'photo pass' only allows you to be in the special roped off VIP section (which I learned later was basically meant for the bouncers to stand in and catch crowd surfers before they reach the stage-- HOWEVER--one really athletic and insane chick managed to jump all the way from the balcony onto the stage and give Spencer Moody a hug, before the bouncers realized what she had done) for 3 songs.

Since their first trip to Portland back in November of 2007, these five guys have consistently impressed with their killer shows.. The Doppleganger has long been a mystery, but now consider it solved. "A double, an identical replica of a person.. The idea behind this is that everyone has a Doppleganger, an identical copy of themselves somewhere in the world.. If the person is good, then the Doppleganger will be evil and vice versa.. It is even said that if the two should meet, then they will both perish.Although there is no evidence that Dopplegangers exist, some people have actually reported claims of witnessing what they believe to be their Doppleganger.

There's been a mighty discussion on the Show-Guide recently regarding house shows and the almighty dollar-dollar-bill-ya'll.. It's been interesting watching this hot topic unfurl. We haven't chimed in too much but rather let this one unfold on it's own and it's still going four days after the first post.. We've gone ahead and pulled out all the Shoutbox commentary and posted it in order in hopes to carry on this topic and to bring in the RSS readers into the conversation. For your annoyance or reading pleasure (it will vary for you post-by-post):

You should never be turned away for lack of funds - but please remember that we need to support those touring bands so scrounge all you can! 4/24/2009 1:52:00 PMfuck that: fuck houses that dont give all the money to bands. unless a window gets broke. or its a benefit. your punk dollars go to punk bands to get to the next punk show. ask your mom for a bigger allowance, or start drinking cheaper beer.;fucking lackasses. 4/24/2009 3:04:00 PMNathan Backous: People that do house shows don't charge money because its fun or to make profit, they do it so they can pass the money on to the touring bands that have to fill their tanks with gas (gas stations don't donate it). If you like seeing bands, be prepared to trade some cash for it.

As i'm sure everybody knows, We're hosting the Best Band PDX 2009 poll on the Show-Guide.. Our friend MIKE informed us that when you hit the [Enter] key on the keyboard after typing in a band - the #1 band gets a vote rather than the band that was manually typed in... That means that The Closet Monsters' vote count is unnaturally high and they didn't really get as many votes as are now counted.. We've thought about the best way to handle this and consulted some good people to help figure this one out.. What we've decided to do is to NOT start the survey over but rather delete the bad count for The Closet Monsters.

It was inevitable, as most loss is, but it is no less heartbreaking. 17 months after The Coop took over for Brainstains, there will no longer be shows at that address that's been repeated so many times over the last few years: 3535 N.. Lombard.. I, for one, will very dearly miss seeing bands in the space that occupied that address.

I had intended to post this as a comment following the "House Show Rules #1: No Jerks!" blogpost, but then it sorta became an essay.. Boom Boom Kid @ the Sea Shanty, 2007.. As someone who's thrown a few hundred shows in houses over the last decade and a half, I gotta say that house-show hosts must be aware of the risks of turning their home into a public space, such as cops, assholes, theft, electrical fire, damage to walls and floors, giant messes to clean up, and even violence.. The solution is not so simple as complaining about jerks on a corner of the internet (such as here!) which will go unchecked by likely every such jerk who needs to check their attitude. The solution surely begins with considering what risks are associated with each show before you even confirm it.

Useless State Records is in the process of collecting tracks from Portland DIY bands to issue the first ever Portland Show Guide Mixtape.. The Show Guide is an integral part of our burgeoning do-it-together musical community, one that has helped us as musicians an infinite amount since its inception.. It is one of the few websites across the country that displays and promotes house shows as well as venues, and is unique because the community can post their own shows, blogs, and messages.. All proceeds from this tape will go to support the increasingly expensive-to-run Portland Show Guide.

Project like updating the Show Guide.I know the guide isn't perfect - that there are a few things that should work better, there are a few things that need to be put into place to make membership better.So-What are your top things you want to see.. I'm dead serious the things you guys post are the only way that things change or get built 'round here so ask/post on what you want to see. Please leave a comment with a few updates you would like to see happen.. For example, we just got this in an email and are working on it (what do you think?)"As for the calendar, i was thinking you could add a big (big enough to fit some words) calendar with show info on it so you can get a more visual representation of your music plans for the month. like in each day box it'd have who's playing and where and when and how much, like a monthly planner kind of thing."The show-guide is about community and we want your feedback as a community on what is going to make the guide better for you.

Forget about the corporate shwill of South by Southwest, Musicfest NW, and all other such bullshit - the Gathering of the Goofpunx is a homemade, not-for-profit fest, celebrating DIY culture and music.. Event organizers have a parade planned, a punk rock spelling bee, the world's biggest game of knockout (you know, that schoolyard basketball game!), and a whole shit ton of amazing DIY bands that have never had their music used in a Gap commercial or Navy advertisement. After paying the venues and giving the touring bands some gas money, all proceeds are going to local charities and non-profits.

The Show-Guide at this point, as we've been told by many (thanks!), is the tip top kaleidoscope of cool as far as any diy show listing site goes.. It is an open-to-anybody wiki where you can post and edit any show to keep everybody up to date on the cool shit that happens here in pdx.. Back in 2007 there was not any central place to find and talk about shows or to keep everybody updated on last minute changes : just bands with myspace pages furiously sending out bulletins at 5pm saying that the 8'oclock show had to move houses across town or whatever and that just want awesome. We created the show-guide wiki, as it stands now, over the last five years.. I got nostalgic a few days back and decided to hit Archive.org to go through some of their screenshots of the various site styles through the years.

So…there are many music “festivals” and whatnot during Memorial Day weekend (and a boat-load of bands that hit the road in relation to said festivals/with the on-set of spring). as result, we have cleverly/effectively ridden on the coat-tails of these festivals/tours and are proud to present the most awesome 7 consecutive-days of music (without resorting to festival “test of endurance”/”epic” line-ups…i.e. 10+ bands on a single-day), which we have deemed:The Know’s MEMORIAL WEEK (because a day is not enough) SHOW SERIESalso, of important note (READ): several of the shows listed will require us to monitor the capacity of our venue/bar area (for everyone’s sake), and we’ll be using the same style of “restricted-entry” that was employed over our 7th Anniversary-Week for the Tragedy/From Ashes Rise/Bi-Marks show. if you are not familiar with how this worked, the amendments to our standard cover/entry to our shows are listed below:- remove our cover-charge “cap” (of $5) in favor of an appropriate alternative…somewhere in the range of $7-10- we close our bar at 7pm and clear out extraneous furniture and what-have-you to create more standing-room/viewing ability for the presumably larger crowd.- we re-open at 8pm and charge entry/stamp hands at our front entrance (instead of the curtained entrance to the venue area…our venue is adjacent to our bar-room/separated by a wall and curtain. the curtain remains open during these shows). the stamps allow for attendees come-and-go out of our space for a smoke/phone call/etc and then be re-admitted to the show.- our front door-person will be running a ‘counter’ and will restrict entry once our capacity is reached. at this point we’ll revert to a one-in/one-out system that is up to the discretion of our front door staff.- we often do not allow drinks at our side-walk tables during “special scenarios,” as we must keep the sidewalk passable for pedestrian traffic/only have the space to allow the anticipated number of smokers at our tables without causing disruption for passer-by. this is also up to the discretion of our front door staff (who are unbelievably amiable/looking out for the best interest of the show…so please work with them).- we’ll run a video-feed of the performances to our barroom tv’s so that people can still see the show in the event that they want leave the venue area (ex – they’re tired from standing/feeling too cramped/need another drink/etc)long and short is…during “special scenarios” we try to maximize the level of comfort and stage visibility for the show-goers/provide greater compensation to the performer(s) while also being particularly sensitive/not causing disruption to our neighborhood. our barroom and venue area will be utilized as ”one room” for the duration of the show (versus being separate entities). i.e. regular patrons/curious passerby/etc are not admitted to any part of our establishment during the show run-time without paying the cover…this allows for the greatest number of people who actually want to see the show/are invested in the bands/music to attend!
