1) ONLY was a four-piece Alternative Metal band from Des Moines, Iowa, active from 2002 to 2012. The roots of Only can be traced back to W.A.D., an Ames-based band in which guitarist Erich Tran was playing by 1998. While working at Best Buy in Des Moines, Tran met 16-year-old Sol Bales, who was playing in another band at the time. 1) ONLY was a four-piece Alternative Metal band from Des Moines, Iowa, active from 2002 to 2012. The roots of Only can be traced back to W.A.D., an Ames-based band in which guitarist Erich Tran was playing by 1998. While working at Best Buy in Des Moines, Tran met 16-year-old Sol Bales, who was playing in another band at the time. In August 2001, Bales joined W.A.D., bringing him together with Tran & bassist Joe Shields. W.A.D. disbanded by early 2002. Around this period, Tran was brought in to audition as a potential guitarist for downthesun. Tran initially knew nothing about the band when he was invited to meet them. What was supposed to be a simple introduction turned into an audition, with Tran being asked to learn one of their songs from his car stereo & return the following day to play it. Rather than joining downthesun, Tran contacted Bales & the two began putting together Only. With Shields also coming from W.A.D., the project carried forward a musical connection that had developed during the band's final period. Drummer Chuck Van Haecke subsequently joined the lineup after the disbanding of Undone, a Des Moines band featuring Josh Brainard on vocals, guitar, & programming, & one of Brainard's post-Slipknot projects. Van Haecke brought a jazz-fusion influenced background to the group, having also performed with Des Moines blues musician Tazz & attended Berklee College of Music. Soon enough, the band started playing all over the Midwest, sharing bills with numerous acts such as On a Pale Horse, FACECAGE, Hollowpoint, Devil with Cheese, & others. They also recorded their first material in 2002 with Matt Sepanic at SR Audio, a three-song self-titled EP. Their second release, Apparitions, followed in 2003 as a five-song EP, documenting both the band's past & present lineups. By February 2003, Only had been together for barely a year & was already developing a reputation within the Des Moines scene. Their shows were primarily centered around Des Moines & Ames, although the band was beginning to expand beyond Iowa, with shows planned in Nebraska & Missouri & others being worked out for Clinton, Iowa, & Minnesota. Only developed a strong relationship with On a Pale Horse, the Des Moines band featuring original Slipknot member Josh Brainard. Brainard & the band helped Only land shows in Des Moines, while also providing advice & industry contacts.
