TERRAPIN is a trio from Athens, Greece, consisting of seasoned musicians who have left their mark on the local scene (two of the three are founding members of acclaimed psych-prog rockers No Man’s Land). But this is much more than just a side project. Centered around the songwriting of guitarist/vocalist Vassilis Bas Athanassiadis, Terrapin explore the fields of folk rock, acid folk, psychedelia and beyond, in a mostly guitar-driven, acoustic setting, with frequent bursts of electricity.
"Sanctuary” is the debut album by Terrapin, a relatively. The songs of “Sanctuary” were recorded from 2013 to 2016 and besides the core trio of guitar/vocals, bass and drums, the album features a bunch of trusty friends: renowned mandolinist George Goumenakis, young multi-instrumentalist (and brilliant songwriter in his own right) Robert Sin on keyboards, all-round cellist Stavros Parginos, Paul Karapiperis of Small Blues Trap fame on harmonica, and last but not least, the mighty Bill Hunchback on sitar.

"Let me tell you the story about a search. A search for talent, a search for creativity, a search for genius.
In times of darkness and oppression, two lost souls found each other. One of them had heard people calling him many names: violator, riff-raff, long-haired scum… But when he went to places where he wasn’t that notorious yet, he introduces himself as Gert. The other one was about two years younger. He wasn’t that well-known as Gert yet, but it wouldn’t take long until his name as well, would be causing a wave of awe everywhere. His true name was Pieter, but due to the respect everyone had for him, people ought to call him Pope. These two men of freedom had one special thing in common. They shared a love for music and so they started to forge plans to start up a league, a league of men who loved music and played it, inspired by this passion. Gert would take care of the rhythm-section, while Pope would be giving support by playing extraordinary bass-lines.
Although this master plan was more than brilliant, they missed something. Something very necessary. They were in desperate need of a lead-guitarist. Someone with an illuminated mind, just like theirs and by preference someone with an unknown virtuosity. So the search began. After a while, the league counted three souls, bursting of creativity. Anyone could see that Gorik was the missing piece that completed the puzzle. And so time passed by, and the musical qualities of each member of the band became bigger and all three faced less difficulties to get their message, through music, to the public. I say: “through music”, because that was all there was: great music. Slowly, the band began to realise that music wasn’t enough.
They needed words and someone to sing these words. And so a new search started. People came to offer their services, tried to reach the same level as the three original band members, but all of them failed. Until one day in April ’07, when a new personage came into this story. His name was Robbert. The sound of his voice was the right colour in the spectrum of this psychedelic music, and his thoughts followed the same lines.
The rareness of this league made it obvious that the name of the band had to be referring to something exceptional too, and so they preferred the name ‘Terrapin’, while a terrapin is a rare turtle. Making music in their own (kind of freaked-out) way is a serious gain for the musical landscape of today. And the fact that everything seems to be working out good for Terrapin, nowadays, only means that the whole search was worth the effort."
