The Terrapin is comprised of several very different individuals from varied backgrounds, musical and otherwise. Rufo Chan, drummer, and Vanessa Lynn, vocalist, met during a stint together in a garage rock band. In time, they would both leave the band separately. During the latter period, Rufo would become acquainted with guitarist Alan Passman through a mutual friend. They jammed together in Passman’s previous band which broke up shortly after this but he assured Chan that they would eventually do something together and it would be “good.”
After a night of drunken revelry, Vanessa and Rufo decided to take a chance on going to a show at a local Long Beach watering hole known for having a show at least five nights of the week. Who should they run into but Alan. Several weeks later, he would initiate a jam session that would lead to the birth of the band. After going through several line-up augmentations that yielded nothing, but dead-ends and learning experiences; the trio decided to start playing out as such in the greater LA-area.
After doing the initial tracking of their DIY-released EP, Kill the Terrapin, with John Hylander, Eartha Kitt UK fame; the band decided that it wanted to take the next step in loaning out the talents of veteran producer/mixer/engineer/musician Alex Newport (At the Drive-In, The Mars Volta, The Melvins, Sepultura). They were more than happy to work with him and the finished product of his involvement.
The aforementioned EP is a collection of songs that highlights the tension between such disparate influences like Broadcast, The Last, Smashing Pumpkins, Murder City Devils, Portishead, King Crimson, the Descendants and Black Sabbath.
In a studio, it is somewhat easy to help convey as large a sound as a band may want but that takes some serious personnel. Thus the explanation of the inclusion of Alan’s good friend, Bill Sanderson, into the fold. As a multi-instrumentalist, Sanderson is the missing link in a multitude of ways as his upbringing in Jazz and Classical helps to broaden the scope of what the group does while they go through a Spinal Tap-esque relationship with bassists. Although the position is being held down rather impressively well by a man named Vince Phung.
With ambitions of continued writing, recording and touring; The Terrapin has plans to be someone’s favorite band.
