The Field is the primary electronic music project of Axel Willner, a Swedish electronic music producer and DJ who is widely recognized as a pioneering figure in modern microhouse, minimal techno, and ambient music. Born in Stockholm and later based in Berlin, Willner has been active under this alias since 2003, establishing a reputation for a highly distinct and influential production style. His foundational technique relies on micro-sampling, a process where he cuts tiny, often unrecognizable audio fragments from classic pop, rock, and soul recordings. By reassembling these micro-samples into dense, hypnotic loops that mutate subtly over long durations, he creates soundscapes that blend propulsive club rhythms with deep emotional resonance. Notably, he produced much of his early, critically acclaimed catalog using Jeskola Buzz, a freeware tracker software.Willner achieved a massive critical breakthrough with his 2007 debut album, From Here We Go Sublime, which was celebrated globally and named one of the top electronic records of the century by publications like Resident Advisor. Following this success, he spent over a decade as a core artist on the legendary Cologne-based electronic label Kompakt, releasing a string of celebrated full-length albums including Yesterday and Today (2009), Looping State of Mind (2011), and The Follower (2016). After an eight-year hiatus from solo releases and a step back from live touring, he returned to the electronic music landscape in May 2026 with the five-track project Now You Exist, released via the Stockholm-based label Studio Barnhus 2.
