The Need
There are at least two bands called The Need. 1. Started in the late 1990s, and broke up in 2000 formed by Rachel Carns and Radio Sloan as a "queercore band". 2. Originated in Brisbane, Australia by Bradley Stokes, Pharos Roche, and Steven Leslie in March, 2012. (Alternative Rock) 1. The Need was a queercore band that originated in Olympia, Washington in the late 1990s. It was formed by Rachel Carns (drums and vocals) and Radio Sloan (guitar and bass guitar); both were veterans of other indie rock bands. Read more on Last.fm …read full bio

IMPORTANT OLCC INFO!. Support the OLCC’s plans to allow music venues to admit people under 21 by writing an email before Friday, March 7, 2008.. Visit PDX POP NOW! and find everything you need to support this issue and make a difference. pc-pdx's summary: Remember the OLCC letter witting campaign from last fall and the possibility of opening up some of the venues to be able to serve the All Ages music community?. Well it failed with a vote of 3-2 against accepting the amendments that would allow for such a change.

White Fang - A Call For Help

Hello friends,As you may know, White Fang is planning to tour the U.S. next month.. We were relying on the sale of Kyle’s car, a 2000 Chevrolet Cavalier, in order to purchase a van.Unfortunately, today we were leaving a jam session and the worst thing that could ever happen, did indeed happen.Kyle, thinking that his car was in reverse, pushed on the gas sending the front of the car straight into the truck parked in front of us.. The truck is fine, but Kyle’s car is now, basically, totaled. The hood is smashed and the radiator is busted.. So is the left headlight. Now, not only do we not have a way to get a van, but we are not going to have almost any money for tour.

Weekend With the So So Glos

I hope you caught The So So Glos this last weekend because it was -amazing-! I have to say without a doubt, that Saturday's show at The Coop was the most incredable show i've ever seen.. Two of my favorite bands, The Taxpayers and the So So Glos just killed it.. It was great because i've never been worried about The Taxpayers being able to keep up with any of the other bands...somebody needed to give those boys a challenge!. I could definately tell there was a strong fire in Rob Taxpayers eyes to bring it after that incredable SSG set.

The End of The Hush - Shutdown!

last night the inevitable happened, 5 cops, 1 olcc rep, and 2 fire marshals stopped the show and let us know that we were to have no more shows until we have a permit.. Here's the reason we don't have one to begin with: due to the fact that the performance hall is three stories up we would be given a capacity of LESS THAN 49 INCLUDING PERFORMERS AND STAFF.That's not a lot of people. you can see why it was not appealing for us to go legit.so now I have a hand full of shows that I need your help in placing.I've contacted the artistery, the wail, backspace, disjecta and worksound about taking some bills, is there anywhere i've left out?all in all, I want to continue to work with the music community in making it the raddest it can be, there are so many amazing bands in portland right now and we have all been doing our part in supporting that. lets keep working together in harnessing that, whether it be attending a show, spreading the word about a band you really like and buying their albums, throwing sweaty house shows for new up and coming bands, or simply telling someone their art is awesome and worth appreciating, every little bit helps.& thank you all for sharing the excitement with me about the bands and shows HUSH has had.. See you around.<3 Rockyp.s.- anyone know of any good warehouses for rent?. HUSH the sequel maybe?

House Shows vs. The Almighty Dollar : Where Do You Stand?

There's been a mighty discussion on the Show-Guide recently regarding house shows and the almighty dollar-dollar-bill-ya'll.. It's been interesting watching this hot topic unfurl. We haven't chimed in too much but rather let this one unfold on it's own and it's still going four days after the first post.. We've gone ahead and pulled out all the Shoutbox commentary and posted it in order in hopes to carry on this topic and to bring in the RSS readers into the conversation. For your annoyance or reading pleasure (it will vary for you post-by-post): 4/24/2009 12:34:48 PMjuvenile: fuck house shows that charge money;we are the brokest city foolz 4/24/2009 12:38:24 PMpc-pdx: Everybody else is broke too, like touring bands that are traveling around the country spending gas money and eating fooods.. You should never be turned away for lack of funds - but please remember that we need to support those touring bands so scrounge all you can! 4/24/2009 1:52:00 PMfuck that: fuck houses that dont give all the money to bands. unless a window gets broke. or its a benefit. your punk dollars go to punk bands to get to the next punk show. ask your mom for a bigger allowance, or start drinking cheaper beer.;fucking lackasses. 4/24/2009 3:04:00 PMNathan Backous: People that do house shows don't charge money because its fun or to make profit, they do it so they can pass the money on to the touring bands that have to fill their tanks with gas (gas stations don't donate it). If you like seeing bands, be prepared to trade some cash for it.

The shows will stop at the 3535, but the house may again see old tennants as John Brainard is back in town to possibly open up a coffee shop or hostel... House Show Rules #2: Bringing Common Sense

I had intended to post this as a comment following the "House Show Rules #1: No Jerks!" blogpost, but then it sorta became an essay.. Boom Boom Kid @ the Sea Shanty, 2007.. As someone who's thrown a few hundred shows in houses over the last decade and a half, I gotta say that house-show hosts must be aware of the risks of turning their home into a public space, such as cops, assholes, theft, electrical fire, damage to walls and floors, giant messes to clean up, and even violence.. The solution is not so simple as complaining about jerks on a corner of the internet (such as here!) which will go unchecked by likely every such jerk who needs to check their attitude. The solution surely begins with considering what risks are associated with each show before you even confirm it.

What Are the Three things You Would Change About the Show-Guide?

It's gloomy portland winter time now which means more time doing inside projects.. Project like updating the Show Guide.I know the guide isn't perfect - that there are a few things that should work better, there are a few things that need to be put into place to make membership better.So-What are your top things you want to see.. I'm dead serious the things you guys post are the only way that things change or get built 'round here so ask/post on what you want to see. Please leave a comment with a few updates you would like to see happen.. For example, we just got this in an email and are working on it (what do you think?)"As for the calendar, i was thinking you could add a big (big enough to fit some words) calendar with show info on it so you can get a more visual representation of your music plans for the month. like in each day box it'd have who's playing and where and when and how much, like a monthly planner kind of thing."The show-guide is about community and we want your feedback as a community on what is going to make the guide better for you.

"Anyone know what CMS this site is based off of?"This site is 100% custom freshness! It started in 2007 as a hardcoded mess - i literally updated the show listings by hand every night at midnight to remove the old shows.Jan 1st 2008 saw version #2 where we actually got a database and pc-pdx started becoming a real website, the wiki format that it is today - rather than a static mess.~July 2009 came version #3, the Red + Black version where the site really started to take off.. The site started to become more user friendly - we had some hits and misses with features..(membership like features were a HUGE failure) It started getting really slow and cumbersome towards the end of its run because i learned to code along with this site and it hasn't always been the highest preforming, scalable implementation.July 5th 2010 - this current version breached the septic internet womb and came into fruition.. A lot of cool new features were added but now that it's so many months later, i see a lot of places for improvement.. You guys might have seen the "Ohhh shit!

Perhaps we truly are “underground.” Below is my obligatory response list, accumulated from attending numerous house shows and parties.. I have to say Drunk Dad gets props for having one of the rowdiest followings in town, while Sexhair is probably the purist Portland punk band since Moral Panic broke up.This year started out rather rough so something needs to be said for the houses that hosted shows.

Support the Guide - play this benefit show(s?)!

We have rad people hosting a benefit show for us and we need your awesome band to play.. It's a bit of a departure for us in that it's a 21+ show and we've never done anything not all-ages.. These people are rad though and approached us with the idea and the Show-Guide is in no position to deny awesome people giving this operation some love.SOIf your band can draw a few people out to a bar on Friday, September 30th - please comment or email and let's hang out!. September is the time where we have to pony up the majority of the ~$1200 it will take to keep us afloat for another year. Thanks to everybody for your support - 21+, mark your calendars!.ALL AGES: somebody throw a house party for us!

Gathering of the Goof Punx - The worlds best DIY festival is coming at you!

What's the Gathering of the Goof Punx?. Only the finest DIY Festival in the world, and it's happening right here in Portland, Oregon April 5th-8th.. Forget about the corporate shwill of South by Southwest, Musicfest NW, and all other such bullshit - the Gathering of the Goofpunx is a homemade, not-for-profit fest, celebrating DIY culture and music.. Event organizers have a parade planned, a punk rock spelling bee, the world's biggest game of knockout (you know, that schoolyard basketball game!), and a whole shit ton of amazing DIY bands that have never had their music used in a Gap commercial or Navy advertisement. After paying the venues and giving the touring bands some gas money, all proceeds are going to local charities and non-profits.

The Know Presents: MEMORIAL WEEK (because a day is not enough)

So…there are many music “festivals” and whatnot during Memorial Day weekend (and a boat-load of bands that hit the road in relation to said festivals/with the on-set of spring). as result, we have cleverly/effectively ridden on the coat-tails of these festivals/tours and are proud to present the most awesome 7 consecutive-days of music (without resorting to festival “test of endurance”/”epic” line-ups…i.e. 10+ bands on a single-day), which we have deemed:The Know’s MEMORIAL WEEK (because a day is not enough) SHOW SERIESalso, of important note (READ): several of the shows listed will require us to monitor the capacity of our venue/bar area (for everyone’s sake), and we’ll be using the same style of “restricted-entry” that was employed over our 7th Anniversary-Week for the Tragedy/From Ashes Rise/Bi-Marks show. if you are not familiar with how this worked, the amendments to our standard cover/entry to our shows are listed below:- remove our cover-charge “cap” (of $5) in favor of an appropriate alternative…somewhere in the range of $7-10- we close our bar at 7pm and clear out extraneous furniture and what-have-you to create more standing-room/viewing ability for the presumably larger crowd.- we re-open at 8pm and charge entry/stamp hands at our front entrance (instead of the curtained entrance to the venue area…our venue is adjacent to our bar-room/separated by a wall and curtain. the curtain remains open during these shows). the stamps allow for attendees come-and-go out of our space for a smoke/phone call/etc and then be re-admitted to the show.- our front door-person will be running a ‘counter’ and will restrict entry once our capacity is reached. at this point we’ll revert to a one-in/one-out system that is up to the discretion of our front door staff.- we often do not allow drinks at our side-walk tables during “special scenarios,” as we must keep the sidewalk passable for pedestrian traffic/only have the space to allow the anticipated number of smokers at our tables without causing disruption for passer-by. this is also up to the discretion of our front door staff (who are unbelievably amiable/looking out for the best interest of the show…so please work with them).- we’ll run a video-feed of the performances to our barroom tv’s so that people can still see the show in the event that they want leave the venue area (ex – they’re tired from standing/feeling too cramped/need another drink/etc)long and short is…during “special scenarios” we try to maximize the level of comfort and stage visibility for the show-goers/provide greater compensation to the performer(s) while also being particularly sensitive/not causing disruption to our neighborhood. our barroom and venue area will be utilized as ”one room” for the duration of the show (versus being separate entities). i.e. regular patrons/curious passerby/etc are not admitted to any part of our establishment during the show run-time without paying the cover…this allows for the greatest number of people who actually want to see the show/are invested in the bands/music to attend!

SAVE BACKSPACE! throw down for a bad ass ALL-AGES venue.

we jacked the following from http://www.indiegogo.com/savebackspace and suggest that you go there and make a donation or, if you personally can't, tell a friend who can afford to make a donation and save one of portlands last ALL-AGES music venues and all-around baddass space!Backspace is in Trouble.Regardless of the role Backspace plays, and that Backspace would like to continue to give to the people of Portland, we have basically been told by the landlord that if we can't come up with $10,000, by the 1st of January, that we will be thrown out.. This means we would no longer be able to play a pivotal role in being a community space for the people of Portland.. We wouldn't be able to house benefits for local non-profits.. We wouldn't be able to give bands an all-ages venue to play in.

    East End Update

--via dBMonkey + East End:East End wants to apologize for the silence since the fire.. We have been waiting for circumstances beyond our control to figure out the future.. We still do not have enough information to know when, or even if, we can open again.. We are still waiting on the city to tell the landlord what the Osborn building needs to make it safe for the public.
