Abbath is a Norwegian black metal band formed in 2015 by former Immortal guitarist and vocalist Abbath Doom Occulta following his departure from Immortal earlier the same year. To date, the band has released three studio albums: "Abbath" (2016), "Outstrider" (2019) and "Dread Reaver" (2022).
In April 2015, it was announced that Abbath Doom Occulta had assembled a new lineup for the project, including King ov Hell (known from God Seed) on bass and a drummer performing under the name Creature. Vredehammer guitarist and vocalist Per Valla was recruited as a live guitarist. The band planned to record its debut album later in 2015 for a 2016 release. During their debut performance at Tuska Open Air 2015, they performed a completed song titled "Fenrir Hunts", which was later included on the debut album.
The self-titled debut album "Abbath" was released on 22 January 2016 through Season of Mist. In December 2015, drummer Creature left the band, followed shortly after by live guitarist Per Valla. Drumming duties were subsequently handled by Gabe Seeber in a live capacity, while Ole André Farstad, who had contributed to the recording of the debut album, joined as a live guitarist.
In 2016, Abbath announced that work had begun on a second album planned for release in 2017. In 2018, King ov Hell left the band, citing differences in artistic direction, and Emil Wiksten also departed around the same period.
In March 2019, it was announced that the second studio album "Outstrider" would be released in July 2019. A revised lineup featuring Ukri Suvilehto on drums, Raud on guitar and Mia Wallace on bass was also introduced. "Outstrider" was released on 5 July 2019.
In November 2019, Abbath Doom Occulta announced that he would enter rehabilitation following a concert in Buenos Aires, Argentina, resulting in the cancellation of the remaining South American tour dates. The performance had been marked by delays and interruptions, and the incident received significant media and fan attention.
In early 2020, Mia Wallace announced her departure from the band shortly before a scheduled European tour. She was replaced on tour by Rusty Cornell. Wallace later joined the band Nervosa and rejoined Abbath in 2021.
In 2021, it was reported that Abbath were recording their third studio album. The album, titled "Dread Reaver", was released on 25 March 2022. In 2025, the band performed at the Hell’s Heroes festival in Houston, Texas.
