Accept is a German heavy metal band from Solingen, formed in 1976 by guitarist Wolf Hoffmann, vocalist Udo Dirkschneider, and bassist Peter Baltes. The group has its origins in the late 1960s under the earlier name Band X. Over the years, Accept has undergone numerous lineup changes. Hoffmann is the only original member to remain in the band and has performed on all of its albums. As of 2024, Accept’s lineup includes Hoffmann, vocalist Mark Tornillo, guitarists Uwe Lulis and Philip Shouse, drummer Christopher Williams, and bassist Martin Motnik. The band has released seventeen studio albums, five live albums, and nine compilation albums.
Accept is recognized for its influence on the development of speed and thrash metal and was part of the German heavy metal scene that emerged in the early to mid-1980s. The band achieved its first commercial success with the 1983 album "Balls to the Wall," which includes the track of the same name and remains their only album certified gold in the United States and Canada.
The band has experienced several breakups and reunions. They disbanded in 1989 following the release of "Eat the Heat," the only album featuring vocalist David Reece, who briefly replaced Dirkschneider. Accept reunited in 1992, releasing three more albums before disbanding again in 1997. A short-lived reunion occurred in 2005. In 2009, Accept announced another reunion with Mark Tornillo, formerly of T.T. Quick, replacing Dirkschneider, who declined to return. With Tornillo, Accept released the albums "Blood of the Nations" (2010), "Stalingrad" (2012), "Blind Rage" (2014), "The Rise of Chaos" (2017), "Too Mean to Die" (2021), and "Humanoid" (2024), which were commercially successful in Germany and entered the top ten on national charts. As of 2024, Accept has sold more than 17 million albums worldwide.
