Just Don't Do It!I was afraid of this...to revisit last year when every portlander had the sweater party, the hipsters and the punks and every scene in-between.. I'm all about unity, bringing all our different scenes together, but this is not the answer Portland.. Like Journey should be left in 2005, let's leave the Christmas Sweater party in 2007.At Thanksgiving time, the first sweater party show was announced -sigh.. There was worry that it would come full swing, but the sweaters stayed mum - until now which is apparently the weekend to plan your sweater party.

As i'm sure everybody knows, We're hosting the Best Band PDX 2009 poll on the Show-Guide.. Our friend MIKE informed us that when you hit the [Enter] key on the keyboard after typing in a band - the #1 band gets a vote rather than the band that was manually typed in... That means that The Closet Monsters' vote count is unnaturally high and they didn't really get as many votes as are now counted.. We've thought about the best way to handle this and consulted some good people to help figure this one out.. What we've decided to do is to NOT start the survey over but rather delete the bad count for The Closet Monsters.

Time it was, and what a time it was, it was A time of innocence, a time of confidences Long ago, it must be, I have a photograph Preserve your memories, they're all that's left you - Simon and Garfunkel It's the kind of loss that hits you suddenly even if you should have expected it.. It was inevitable, as most loss is, but it is no less heartbreaking. 17 months after The Coop took over for Brainstains, there will no longer be shows at that address that's been repeated so many times over the last few years: 3535 N.. Lombard.. I, for one, will very dearly miss seeing bands in the space that occupied that address.

I had intended to post this as a comment following the "House Show Rules #1: No Jerks!" blogpost, but then it sorta became an essay.. Boom Boom Kid @ the Sea Shanty, 2007.. As someone who's thrown a few hundred shows in houses over the last decade and a half, I gotta say that house-show hosts must be aware of the risks of turning their home into a public space, such as cops, assholes, theft, electrical fire, damage to walls and floors, giant messes to clean up, and even violence.. The solution is not so simple as complaining about jerks on a corner of the internet (such as here!) which will go unchecked by likely every such jerk who needs to check their attitude. The solution surely begins with considering what risks are associated with each show before you even confirm it.

The legendary punk club is in it's last few weeks - it will be shutting down for good on Halloween. Here's a quote from the upcoming Willy Week [don't hurt me casey!]"Satyricon, once the longest-running indie rock nightclub on the West Coast and one of Portland’s few all ages venues, will close its doors for good this October.. The building housing the venerable venue has been purchased by local outreach/housing program the MacDonald Center and is slated to be demolished to make way for a new shelter.. The club, which shut down once before in 2003 after an initial two-decade run (when the club opened in 1984, WW’s Zach Dundas noted at it’s ‘03 closure, there was “no Pearl District, no River District, no Chinese Garden, no MAX”), is planning a string of high-profile farewell shows in October, with the final blast happening on Halloween.. Satyricon has been open in its current all ages format since 2006.

Useless State Records is in the process of collecting tracks from Portland DIY bands to issue the first ever Portland Show Guide Mixtape.. The Show Guide is an integral part of our burgeoning do-it-together musical community, one that has helped us as musicians an infinite amount since its inception.. It is one of the few websites across the country that displays and promotes house shows as well as venues, and is unique because the community can post their own shows, blogs, and messages.. All proceeds from this tape will go to support the increasingly expensive-to-run Portland Show Guide.

"Anyone know what CMS this site is based off of?"This site is 100% custom freshness! It started in 2007 as a hardcoded mess - i literally updated the show listings by hand every night at midnight to remove the old shows.Jan 1st 2008 saw version #2 where we actually got a database and pc-pdx started becoming a real website, the wiki format that it is today - rather than a static mess.~July 2009 came version #3, the Red + Black version where the site really started to take off.. The site started to become more user friendly - we had some hits and misses with features..(membership like features were a HUGE failure) It started getting really slow and cumbersome towards the end of its run because i learned to code along with this site and it hasn't always been the highest preforming, scalable implementation.July 5th 2010 - this current version breached the septic internet womb and came into fruition.. A lot of cool new features were added but now that it's so many months later, i see a lot of places for improvement.. You guys might have seen the "Ohhh shit!

On the eve of a new year, I thought it would be fun to get in on the “year-in-review” things that many people/publications/media-outlets do.. PC-PDX has always been a huge supporter of our endeavors at The Know, and what better forum to share this retrospective look at 2011.In chronological order:04.01 - FROM ASHES RISE / NUX VOMICA / TRAUMAThis line-up was so ridiculous that some people on message boards had concluded that our listing was an “April fools” joke...it wasn’t, and the show went down with hundreds of people cramming into our humble venue-area to catch a glimpse of Portland’s finest d-beat crushers. 06.10 - BASEMENT ANIMAL / VILE GASH (OH) / NUKKEHAMMER (OH) / SOCIETY NURSE (WA)Rarely are we able to accommodate a slew of touring-acts that can hold their own with minimal local-support.. But when you’ve got the nastiest sonic-pummeling from crew of Ohioans, and a venerable/touted neighbor from the north, support becomes less of an issue!. Not to mention what would be the final assault from Portland’s very own grind-punks, Basement Animal.06.18 - SLOWMOTIONS (JP) / CRAZY SPIRIT (NY) / ORIGIN OF M (JP) June was the month of unbelievable touring acts playing our stage.
