Empty-TV gives it up for Portland with a few small vignettes on the incredible PDX scene.. They focus on the standard hip bands like StarFucker, YACHT, Southern Belle and the oh-so obvious Thermals but also reach out to the always awesome band Eat Skull.. This is not exactly a good representative cross-section on the many genres and sub-scenes that Portland has to offer but it's still kind of cool.. PC-PDX.com : Portland Show Guide
Next time how about something including Autistic Youth, Red Dons, Estranged and the rest of the punker scene?

Today kicks off the Defectors Summerfector madness.. This is a series of shows happening over the next four days at locations all over town, mostly all-ages.. What really makes this a bad ass fest is that there are two generator shows happening.. One at Burnside Skate park on Sunday and another one at Overlook Park in NE complete with all the legal premits for both noise and booze.

Just Don't Do It!I was afraid of this...to revisit last year when every portlander had the sweater party, the hipsters and the punks and every scene in-between.. I'm all about unity, bringing all our different scenes together, but this is not the answer Portland.. Like Journey should be left in 2005, let's leave the Christmas Sweater party in 2007.At Thanksgiving time, the first sweater party show was announced -sigh.. There was worry that it would come full swing, but the sweaters stayed mum - until now which is apparently the weekend to plan your sweater party.

This show was weird.. It was at the Roseland, where I had heard you couldnt bring in cameras, especially "professional" ones (ie anything that has a detachable lens). So I ended up getting a 'photo pass' from the really nice guys in the band Past Lives, who I had seen before, and were the opening band that night.. This meant that I got to go in this little like 4 ft. section between the crowd and the stage that was roped off, and take pictures, with my 'photo pass'.. Of course, the stage is like 5 ft. tall, and the bands are really far away, and the 'photo pass' only allows you to be in the special roped off VIP section (which I learned later was basically meant for the bouncers to stand in and catch crowd surfers before they reach the stage-- HOWEVER--one really athletic and insane chick managed to jump all the way from the balcony onto the stage and give Spencer Moody a hug, before the bouncers realized what she had done) for 3 songs.

There's been a mighty discussion on the Show-Guide recently regarding house shows and the almighty dollar-dollar-bill-ya'll.. It's been interesting watching this hot topic unfurl. We haven't chimed in too much but rather let this one unfold on it's own and it's still going four days after the first post.. We've gone ahead and pulled out all the Shoutbox commentary and posted it in order in hopes to carry on this topic and to bring in the RSS readers into the conversation. For your annoyance or reading pleasure (it will vary for you post-by-post):

You should never be turned away for lack of funds - but please remember that we need to support those touring bands so scrounge all you can! 4/24/2009 1:52:00 PMfuck that: fuck houses that dont give all the money to bands. unless a window gets broke. or its a benefit. your punk dollars go to punk bands to get to the next punk show. ask your mom for a bigger allowance, or start drinking cheaper beer.;fucking lackasses. 4/24/2009 3:04:00 PMNathan Backous: People that do house shows don't charge money because its fun or to make profit, they do it so they can pass the money on to the touring bands that have to fill their tanks with gas (gas stations don't donate it). It was probably with Plot To Blow Up The Eiffel Tower or some other cacophonous jazz-punk ensemble . Whomever it was, I remember being really excited about seeing the headliner - but it was one of those shows that i left being way more pumped about the local openers: Mustaphamond.. At the time i recall the band was something like 5 dudes doing Dischord meets Converge math-punk.. It was amazing and blew my mind.

The legendary punk club is in it's last few weeks - it will be shutting down for good on Halloween. Here's a quote from the upcoming Willy Week [don't hurt me casey!]"Satyricon, once the longest-running indie rock nightclub on the West Coast and one of Portland’s few all ages venues, will close its doors for good this October.. The building housing the venerable venue has been purchased by local outreach/housing program the MacDonald Center and is slated to be demolished to make way for a new shelter.. The club, which shut down once before in 2003 after an initial two-decade run (when the club opened in 1984, WW’s Zach Dundas noted at it’s ‘03 closure, there was “no Pearl District, no River District, no Chinese Garden, no MAX”), is planning a string of high-profile farewell shows in October, with the final blast happening on Halloween.. Perhaps we truly are “underground.” Below is my obligatory response list, accumulated from attending numerous house shows and parties.. I have to say Drunk Dad gets props for having one of the rowdiest followings in town, while Sexhair is probably the purist Portland punk band since Moral Panic broke up.This year started out rather rough so something needs to be said for the houses that hosted shows.

On the eve of a new year, I thought it would be fun to get in on the “year-in-review” things that many people/publications/media-outlets do.. PC-PDX has always been a huge supporter of our endeavors at The Know, and what better forum to share this retrospective look at 2011.In chronological order:04.01 - FROM ASHES RISE / NUX VOMICA / TRAUMAThis line-up was so ridiculous that some people on message boards had concluded that our listing was an “April fools” joke...it wasn’t, and the show went down with hundreds of people cramming into our humble venue-area to catch a glimpse of Portland’s finest d-beat crushers. 06.10 - BASEMENT ANIMAL / VILE GASH (OH) / NUKKEHAMMER (OH) / SOCIETY NURSE (WA)Rarely are we able to accommodate a slew of touring-acts that can hold their own with minimal local-support.. But when you’ve got the nastiest sonic-pummeling from crew of Ohioans, and a venerable/touted neighbor from the north, support becomes less of an issue!. Not to mention what would be the final assault from Portland’s very own grind-punks, Basement Animal.06.18 - SLOWMOTIONS (JP) / CRAZY SPIRIT (NY) / ORIGIN OF M (JP) June was the month of unbelievable touring acts playing our stage.

Event organizers have a parade planned, a punk rock spelling bee, the world's biggest game of knockout (you know, that schoolyard basketball game!), and a whole shit ton of amazing DIY bands that have never had their music used in a Gap commercial or Navy advertisement. After paying the venues and giving the touring bands some gas money, all proceeds are going to local charities and non-profits.

So…there are many music “festivals” and whatnot during Memorial Day weekend (and a boat-load of bands that hit the road in relation to said festivals/with the on-set of spring). as result, we have cleverly/effectively ridden on the coat-tails of these festivals/tours and are proud to present the most awesome 7 consecutive-days of music (without resorting to festival “test of endurance”/”epic” line-ups…i.e. 10+ bands on a single-day), which we have deemed:The Know’s MEMORIAL WEEK (because a day is not enough) SHOW SERIESalso, of important note (READ): several of the shows listed will require us to monitor the capacity of our venue/bar area (for everyone’s sake), and we’ll be using the same style of “restricted-entry” that was employed over our 7th Anniversary-Week for the Tragedy/From Ashes Rise/Bi-Marks show. if you are not familiar with how this worked, the amendments to our standard cover/entry to our shows are listed below:- remove our cover-charge “cap” (of $5) in favor of an appropriate alternative…somewhere in the range of $7-10- we close our bar at 7pm and clear out extraneous furniture and what-have-you to create more standing-room/viewing ability for the presumably larger crowd.- we re-open at 8pm and charge entry/stamp hands at our front entrance (instead of the curtained entrance to the venue area…our venue is adjacent to our bar-room/separated by a wall and curtain. the curtain remains open during these shows). the stamps allow for attendees come-and-go out of our space for a smoke/phone call/etc and then be re-admitted to the show.- our front door-person will be running a ‘counter’ and will restrict entry once our capacity is reached. at this point we’ll revert to a one-in/one-out system that is up to the discretion of our front door staff.- we often do not allow drinks at our side-walk tables during “special scenarios,” as we must keep the sidewalk passable for pedestrian traffic/only have the space to allow the anticipated number of smokers at our tables without causing disruption for passer-by. this is also up to the discretion of our front door staff (who are unbelievably amiable/looking out for the best interest of the show…so please work with them).- we’ll run a video-feed of the performances to our barroom tv’s so that people can still see the show in the event that they want leave the venue area (ex – they’re tired from standing/feeling too cramped/need another drink/etc)long and short is…during “special scenarios” we try to maximize the level of comfort and stage visibility for the show-goers/provide greater compensation to the performer(s) while also being particularly sensitive/not causing disruption to our neighborhood. our barroom and venue area will be utilized as ”one room” for the duration of the show (versus being separate entities). i.e. regular patrons/curious passerby/etc are not admitted to any part of our establishment during the show run-time without paying the cover…this allows for the greatest number of people who actually want to see the show/are invested in the bands/music to attend!
