They focus on the standard hip bands like StarFucker, YACHT, Southern Belle and the oh-so obvious Thermals but also reach out to the always awesome band Eat Skull.. This is not exactly a good representative cross-section on the many genres and sub-scenes that Portland has to offer but it's still kind of cool.. PC-PDX.com : Portland Show Guide

Not at all the metal-centric dirge fest that I was expecting (especially on this bill- no offense, JXATG and TBTSYW). The Usaisamonster has a much more psychedelic feel- quiet, almost pop-y vocal harmonies in the darker sounding minor keys and synth/keyboard parts that weave into with the rest of the arrangement to make it sound real dream-y.. Really good, really different than what I had expected, which almost always is nice.

This show was weird.. It was at the Roseland, where I had heard you couldnt bring in cameras, especially "professional" ones (ie anything that has a detachable lens). So I ended up getting a 'photo pass' from the really nice guys in the band Past Lives, who I had seen before, and were the opening band that night.. This meant that I got to go in this little like 4 ft. section between the crowd and the stage that was roped off, and take pictures, with my 'photo pass'.. Of course, the stage is like 5 ft. tall, and the bands are really far away, and the 'photo pass' only allows you to be in the special roped off VIP section (which I learned later was basically meant for the bouncers to stand in and catch crowd surfers before they reach the stage-- HOWEVER--one really athletic and insane chick managed to jump all the way from the balcony onto the stage and give Spencer Moody a hug, before the bouncers realized what she had done) for 3 songs.

That means that The Closet Monsters' vote count is unnaturally high and they didn't really get as many votes as are now counted.. We've thought about the best way to handle this and consulted some good people to help figure this one out.. I had intended to post this as a comment following the "House Show Rules #1: No Jerks!" blogpost, but then it sorta became an essay.. Boom Boom Kid @ the Sea Shanty, 2007.. As someone who's thrown a few hundred shows in houses over the last decade and a half, I gotta say that house-show hosts must be aware of the risks of turning their home into a public space, such as cops, assholes, theft, electrical fire, damage to walls and floors, giant messes to clean up, and even violence.. The solution is not so simple as complaining about jerks on a corner of the internet (such as here!) which will go unchecked by likely every such jerk who needs to check their attitude. The solution surely begins with considering what risks are associated with each show before you even confirm it.

This is why Portland has the best damn music scene in the country.Check it out, There are about 305 active houses and venues hosting shows here in Portland.. There are so many fucking awesome people hosting shows and so many more bands here that you barely have to cross the street to catch a part of the scene.. All it takes is a basement and some tallboys and you're gold.. We've been doing the Show-Guide for about three years now and have almost 700 venues and houses listed, about 305 are them have been active and thrown shows in the past five months.

Awesome uhm....this band kicks ass.Is there anything else to say?First time i saw these guys was 6+ years ago at the now way defunct Meow Meow.. It was probably with Plot To Blow Up The Eiffel Tower or some other cacophonous jazz-punk ensemble . Whomever it was, I remember being really excited about seeing the headliner - but it was one of those shows that i left being way more pumped about the local openers: Mustaphamond.. At the time i recall the band was something like 5 dudes doing Dischord meets Converge math-punk.. It was amazing and blew my mind.

Hi Hi,The Band Bios and Tags are awesome and are a huge step forward in the coolness and usefulness of this site.. They are also, on occasion, the source of some WTF?! confusion:"Why is my show tagged 'dubstep'?. I'm not dubtep or reggae!""The listing for my band shows the wrong bio - what's up?"Let it be known that we don't actually host any of the band bios or tags at this moment in time.. All of the band bios come from user submitted data from Last.Fm.

Most of the bands listed correctly will have Bios attached to them but there are a number of bands out there that don't yet have these posted.. If you're looking to get a bio posted for your band, there's a trick to it:All of the Bios come from Last.Fm.The way last.fm works is through a thing called "scrobbling".Scrobbling works by installing a program on your computer that catalogs and tracks what you listen to - all this info goes back to the Last.fm database.. It's really neat and gives you fun facts and stats on your listening habbits. The way a band begins to exist in the system is by somebody listening to it.As far as i know, there's no way to manually enter in a new band to the system : it HAS to be be scrobbled meaning you have to listen to it.Even if your band doesn't have any music recorded, Don't worry - it's not a problem, just get clever:Just throw on an ABBA tune (you know you have it) after renaming the band "ABBA" to whatever your band name is ("Tijuana Poop Smugglers" ?).Listen to the song and make sure it's 'scrobbled'.This will get the band name into the system. - note that it won't show up immediately, it may take a few hours or more.. You will then be able to add and edit the Bio and it will show up on pc-pdx anytime anybody hovers on it or checks out your band page.

The building housing the venerable venue has been purchased by local outreach/housing program the MacDonald Center and is slated to be demolished to make way for a new shelter.. The club, which shut down once before in 2003 after an initial two-decade run (when the club opened in 1984, WW’s Zach Dundas noted at it’s ‘03 closure, there was “no Pearl District, no River District, no Chinese Garden, no MAX”), is planning a string of high-profile farewell shows in October, with the final blast happening on Halloween.. Satyricon has been open in its current all ages format since 2006.

It's gloomy portland winter time now which means more time doing inside projects.. Project like updating the Show Guide.I know the guide isn't perfect - that there are a few things that should work better, there are a few things that need to be put into place to make membership better.So-What are your top things you want to see.. I'm dead serious the things you guys post are the only way that things change or get built 'round here so ask/post on what you want to see. Please leave a comment with a few updates you would like to see happen.. For example, we just got this in an email and are working on it (what do you think?)"As for the calendar, i was thinking you could add a big (big enough to fit some words) calendar with show info on it so you can get a more visual representation of your music plans for the month. like in each day box it'd have who's playing and where and when and how much, like a monthly planner kind of thing."The show-guide is about community and we want your feedback as a community on what is going to make the guide better for you.

Yep, it's true! All 19,637 flyers went kaputznik and made a super bye-bye action with no recycle bin love of any kind.I am uber careful and paranoid of these things and still manage to pull an epic maneuver like this about once a year. -Last year whilst working on a client site, i deleted the entire four-year calendar set for *two* site for the Solano County Library.. YEAH BUDDY.Yep, So - where we're at now is that i quickly dropped $43 to get some magic (Slingblade)"Should'nta done that boy" software so as i can try to get back the deleted info off the hard drive. -IT was a half win.. I think we got back most of the files but there seems to be an issue where the files that came back did so with different data or whatever : The file names no longer match the actual show info they should contain so SHIT IS BANANANANAS all over the site right now.I have since found a version of the flyers folder in our old svn repo from about 6-weeks ago when we made some reconfiguration changes.. I, in all my awesomeness, didn't get these two flyer related folders back into svn sync (because we're virtualizing the directories to share the data with other sites, NERD stuff..) and totally blew the gun in the face. It's okay though.

On the eve of a new year, I thought it would be fun to get in on the “year-in-review” things that many people/publications/media-outlets do.. PC-PDX has always been a huge supporter of our endeavors at The Know, and what better forum to share this retrospective look at 2011.In chronological order:04.01 - FROM ASHES RISE / NUX VOMICA / TRAUMAThis line-up was so ridiculous that some people on message boards had concluded that our listing was an “April fools” joke...it wasn’t, and the show went down with hundreds of people cramming into our humble venue-area to catch a glimpse of Portland’s finest d-beat crushers. 06.10 - BASEMENT ANIMAL / VILE GASH (OH) / NUKKEHAMMER (OH) / SOCIETY NURSE (WA)Rarely are we able to accommodate a slew of touring-acts that can hold their own with minimal local-support.. But when you’ve got the nastiest sonic-pummeling from crew of Ohioans, and a venerable/touted neighbor from the north, support becomes less of an issue!. Not to mention what would be the final assault from Portland’s very own grind-punks, Basement Animal.06.18 - SLOWMOTIONS (JP) / CRAZY SPIRIT (NY) / ORIGIN OF M (JP) June was the month of unbelievable touring acts playing our stage.

we found a new vps host with whom we were able to score a sweet deal and get a bitchin' hardware upgrade that essentially doubles our config stats for HALF THE MOTHERFUCKING PRICE. ...i wrote a bunch more here but i'll refrain from actually publishing my angry rant on thought that the current vps host sees this and decides AGAIN to shut off our service. -i'm sure it was entirely accidental though... just like how the site has gone down several times a week for the last ..LONG TIME NOW. anyway, everybody that is not still reading this - brace for some slow spots and a possible few hours of outage whilst we switch over.THANKS AND BIG LOVE TO YOU!

What's the Gathering of the Goof Punx?. Only the finest DIY Festival in the world, and it's happening right here in Portland, Oregon April 5th-8th.. Forget about the corporate shwill of South by Southwest, Musicfest NW, and all other such bullshit - the Gathering of the Goofpunx is a homemade, not-for-profit fest, celebrating DIY culture and music.. Event organizers have a parade planned, a punk rock spelling bee, the world's biggest game of knockout (you know, that schoolyard basketball game!), and a whole shit ton of amazing DIY bands that have never had their music used in a Gap commercial or Navy advertisement. After paying the venues and giving the touring bands some gas money, all proceeds are going to local charities and non-profits.

It's not often that you knowingly get to be a part in one of the most amazing and powerful moments of a persons life - and i'm not just talking about the man with the mic.. What we all got to be a part of tonight at The Gathering was obsurd and outstanding.. There were, most certainly, a few people at Backspace tonight who felt (at least the beginning of) a huge weight lifted off them and their lives are all that much better for it.Goofpunx is friends, Goofpunx is family.Goofpunx recognize courage and conviction and turn life into beauty.. I love all you motherfukers! Please continue to support each other and embrace everybody for who they are and all the good inside of them.

The Show-Guide at this point, as we've been told by many (thanks!), is the tip top kaleidoscope of cool as far as any diy show listing site goes.. It is an open-to-anybody wiki where you can post and edit any show to keep everybody up to date on the cool shit that happens here in pdx.. Back in 2007 there was not any central place to find and talk about shows or to keep everybody updated on last minute changes : just bands with myspace pages furiously sending out bulletins at 5pm saying that the 8'oclock show had to move houses across town or whatever and that just want awesome. We created the show-guide wiki, as it stands now, over the last five years.. I got nostalgic a few days back and decided to hit Archive.org to go through some of their screenshots of the various site styles through the years.

So…there are many music “festivals” and whatnot during Memorial Day weekend (and a boat-load of bands that hit the road in relation to said festivals/with the on-set of spring). as result, we have cleverly/effectively ridden on the coat-tails of these festivals/tours and are proud to present the most awesome 7 consecutive-days of music (without resorting to festival “test of endurance”/”epic” line-ups…i.e. 10+ bands on a single-day), which we have deemed:The Know’s MEMORIAL WEEK (because a day is not enough) SHOW SERIESalso, of important note (READ): several of the shows listed will require us to monitor the capacity of our venue/bar area (for everyone’s sake), and we’ll be using the same style of “restricted-entry” that was employed over our 7th Anniversary-Week for the Tragedy/From Ashes Rise/Bi-Marks show. if you are not familiar with how this worked, the amendments to our standard cover/entry to our shows are listed below:- remove our cover-charge “cap” (of $5) in favor of an appropriate alternative…somewhere in the range of $7-10- we close our bar at 7pm and clear out extraneous furniture and what-have-you to create more standing-room/viewing ability for the presumably larger crowd.- we re-open at 8pm and charge entry/stamp hands at our front entrance (instead of the curtained entrance to the venue area…our venue is adjacent to our bar-room/separated by a wall and curtain. the curtain remains open during these shows). the stamps allow for attendees come-and-go out of our space for a smoke/phone call/etc and then be re-admitted to the show.- our front door-person will be running a ‘counter’ and will restrict entry once our capacity is reached. at this point we’ll revert to a one-in/one-out system that is up to the discretion of our front door staff.- we often do not allow drinks at our side-walk tables during “special scenarios,” as we must keep the sidewalk passable for pedestrian traffic/only have the space to allow the anticipated number of smokers at our tables without causing disruption for passer-by. this is also up to the discretion of our front door staff (who are unbelievably amiable/looking out for the best interest of the show…so please work with them).- we’ll run a video-feed of the performances to our barroom tv’s so that people can still see the show in the event that they want leave the venue area (ex – they’re tired from standing/feeling too cramped/need another drink/etc)long and short is…during “special scenarios” we try to maximize the level of comfort and stage visibility for the show-goers/provide greater compensation to the performer(s) while also being particularly sensitive/not causing disruption to our neighborhood. our barroom and venue area will be utilized as ”one room” for the duration of the show (versus being separate entities). i.e. regular patrons/curious passerby/etc are not admitted to any part of our establishment during the show run-time without paying the cover…this allows for the greatest number of people who actually want to see the show/are invested in the bands/music to attend!

I just got back from a drinking tour of Scandinavia which you know was fucking awesome.. I was hanging out with some rad Germans and of course drinking often leads to youtube so we shared a few gems.. I gave them the gift that is Chuggo and what they offered up just blew my mind.. Here, i share with you, the most hardcore gangstarr motherfucker keeping Deutschland real: Moneyboy.I'm not even capable of putting words around this legend on the mic so i'll leave it to Moneyboy himself "ich bin der Shit - Bitches"Money Boy - "Dreh den Swag auf"I might suggest waiting until you've had 9 or 12 beers before jumping into the vid - so, you know, you FULLY appreciate it.

Hey everybody!Last.fm is where we currently get the band bios and it appears that their servers have been going through some funky patches lately.A few weeks back, we noticed that some band pages were taking something on order of a full minute or two for loading.. SUCKASS!We responding with "ohfuck, we gotta do something about that" so we created a new data access call that will abort after 2 seconds of no response.. If that happens, it means that you will see a band page with NO bio.. The bios might come back intermittently or they might be out for a while... it's all up to last.fm at the moment. We figured that it was more important for you guys to be able to surf through bands links, or whatevs you're doing, and find the shows quickly - rather than waiting for who knows how long for the bios to load.(for the nerds: i realize there should be a note on the page saying that a timeout happened and those bios are temp unavailable, but our shitty old code doesn't easily allow for that right now.

One of my favorite bands of all time is playing in town tonight and i feel it is my obligation to boycott.I don't think i could actually bear to see Refused.. The Shape of Punk to Come is one of the best, most solid albums ever released and it never got the justice it deserved with the bands sudden breakup. -That was 15 years ago though.. What if i did actually see this show and it sucked?. I don't know if i could handle that.

Been hanging out at SLABTOWN in NW PDX planning a party (10/27 @ Slabtown!) and am really impressed how the new owner, Doug, is making that place SHINE!! It was always a cool space, but hard to get good dynamics due to the low ceilings and concrete everywhere - 'twas WALL OF RACKET - THIS IS ALL CHANGING.. The stage area acoustics have been adjusted, and the stage has been spruced up and looks good (if you will recall, it used to be a shithole). Furthermore, the kitchen and food look great too - in a nod to SATYRICON'S FELLINI/EAT OR DIE there is a decided Greek/Middle Eastern slant (pita bread, hummus, salads etc), and they offer hand-cut fries as well.. Cheap and vegan-friendly.. Here is the kicker: Starting in November, they are preparing to do ALL AGES shows!

we jacked the following from http://www.indiegogo.com/savebackspace and suggest that you go there and make a donation or, if you personally can't, tell a friend who can afford to make a donation and save one of portlands last ALL-AGES music venues and all-around baddass space!Backspace is in Trouble.Regardless of the role Backspace plays, and that Backspace would like to continue to give to the people of Portland, we have basically been told by the landlord that if we can't come up with $10,000, by the 1st of January, that we will be thrown out.. This means we would no longer be able to play a pivotal role in being a community space for the people of Portland.. We wouldn't be able to house benefits for local non-profits.. We wouldn't be able to give bands an all-ages venue to play in.

East End is closed for at least this weekend due to the fire that took place at the Osborn Building this morning as reported by KATU.. East End will reopen as soon as possible.. How long will depend on the extent of damage inside the bar and show room.. We will keep people updated about our status through the website at www.eastendportand.com (the design of which by the way was recently updated by our good friends at DBmonkey so this is a great time to check that out!) and via these email list updates.
