You
YOU (German Electronic band) German outfit YOU was formed when Udo Hanten (synths, sequencers, Mellotron) decided to end his tentative steps toward forming a solo career in 1978; and decided to work with Ulrich Weber (guitars, percussion) instead. After recording a few tracks in 1978, the pair decided to record a full album, and with the inclusion of Albin Meskes (synths, sequencers, Mellotron) and Harald Grosskopf (drums, synths) they hit the studio again to create their debut album "Electric Day", issued in the fall of 1979. IMPORTANT OLCC INFO!. Support the OLCC’s plans to allow music venues to admit people under 21 by writing an email before Friday, March 7, 2008.. Visit PDX POP NOW! and find everything you need to support this issue and make a difference. pc-pdx's summary: Remember the OLCC letter witting campaign from last fall and the possibility of opening up some of the venues to be able to serve the All Ages music community?. Well it failed with a vote of 3-2 against accepting the amendments that would allow for such a change.

Empty-TV gives it up for Portland with a few small vignettes on the incredible PDX scene.. They focus on the standard hip bands like StarFucker, YACHT, Southern Belle and the oh-so obvious Thermals but also reach out to the always awesome band Eat Skull.. This is not exactly a good representative cross-section on the many genres and sub-scenes that Portland has to offer but it's still kind of cool.. We were relying on the sale of Kyle’s car, a 2000 Chevrolet Cavalier, in order to purchase a van.Unfortunately, today we were leaving a jam session and the worst thing that could ever happen, did indeed happen.Kyle, thinking that his car was in reverse, pushed on the gas sending the front of the car straight into the truck parked in front of us.. The truck is fine, but Kyle’s car is now, basically, totaled. The hood is smashed and the radiator is busted.. So is the left headlight. Now, not only do we not have a way to get a van, but we are not going to have almost any money for tour.

Groadie in Pink-- JonnyX and the Groadies

The two local bands in this line-up were amazing, but since I am probably going to blog about them again in the future, I am going to stick to the touring band, The Usaisamonster.. Not at all the metal-centric dirge fest that I was expecting (especially on this bill- no offense, JXATG and TBTSYW). The Usaisamonster has a much more psychedelic feel- quiet, almost pop-y vocal harmonies in the darker sounding minor keys and synth/keyboard parts that weave into with the rest of the arrangement to make it sound real dream-y.. Really good, really different than what I had expected, which almost always is nice.

The End of The Hush - Shutdown!

last night the inevitable happened, 5 cops, 1 olcc rep, and 2 fire marshals stopped the show and let us know that we were to have no more shows until we have a permit.. Here's the reason we don't have one to begin with: due to the fact that the performance hall is three stories up we would be given a capacity of LESS THAN 49 INCLUDING PERFORMERS AND STAFF.That's not a lot of people. you can see why it was not appealing for us to go legit.so now I have a hand full of shows that I need your help in placing.I've contacted the artistery, the wail, backspace, disjecta and worksound about taking some bills, is there anywhere i've left out?all in all, I want to continue to work with the music community in making it the raddest it can be, there are so many amazing bands in portland right now and we have all been doing our part in supporting that. lets keep working together in harnessing that, whether it be attending a show, spreading the word about a band you really like and buying their albums, throwing sweaty house shows for new up and coming bands, or simply telling someone their art is awesome and worth appreciating, every little bit helps.& thank you all for sharing the excitement with me about the bands and shows HUSH has had.. See you around.<3 Rockyp.s.- anyone know of any good warehouses for rent?. HUSH the sequel maybe?

    Murder City Devils @ Roseland

This show was weird.. It was at the Roseland, where I had heard you couldnt bring in cameras, especially "professional" ones (ie anything that has a detachable lens). So I ended up getting a 'photo pass' from the really nice guys in the band Past Lives, who I had seen before, and were the opening band that night.. This meant that I got to go in this little like 4 ft. section between the crowd and the stage that was roped off, and take pictures, with my 'photo pass'.. Of course, the stage is like 5 ft. tall, and the bands are really far away, and the 'photo pass' only allows you to be in the special roped off VIP section (which I learned later was basically meant for the bouncers to stand in and catch crowd surfers before they reach the stage-- HOWEVER--one really athletic and insane chick managed to jump all the way from the balcony onto the stage and give Spencer Moody a hug, before the bouncers realized what she had done) for 3 songs.

You Done Fell Offt: Dane Cook

Remember your first comedy special?. You had that joke about public bathrooms and the doors on the stalls, it was kind of funnie, kind of true. a lot of people would just leave the joke, but not you, you took it to another level when you did that full commit Hong-Kong-Phooey flying force egg-drop leg chop on that imaginary stall door and flatlined your ass on stage - that's fucking funny shit man!Your first two cd's were solid and entertaining. What happened with the Madison Square Garden thing man?. You're wearing $1,600 jeans and yelling at your fans for not believing some imaginary dude floats around in the sky.. What's up man - you go on extended hypotheticals not for my entertainment so i'm sure you're just doing it to hear the sound of your own voice.I did really like you in that movie though, Dan In real Life.

Bear Feet : Portland's Best New Band

Playing their first public show, these six kids packed the Coop with a horde of friends and pretty much shook the place to the ground.. Bear Feet brings fresh flavor - straight from the 30's.. These teenagers offer a sort of Ragtime Americana Stand-Up Bass, delicious Jug-band jazz that's thick brewed in 80 year old styles.Lovely twin vocals from the lovely Taylor and Elena run reminiscent of all that's good from the Ditty Bops.. With two members coming from the defunct thrash band Tibetan Beef Garden, the male half of the string section shows amazing diversity in their talent.

House Shows vs. The Almighty Dollar : Where Do You Stand?

There's been a mighty discussion on the Show-Guide recently regarding house shows and the almighty dollar-dollar-bill-ya'll.. It's been interesting watching this hot topic unfurl. We haven't chimed in too much but rather let this one unfold on it's own and it's still going four days after the first post.. We've gone ahead and pulled out all the Shoutbox commentary and posted it in order in hopes to carry on this topic and to bring in the RSS readers into the conversation. For your annoyance or reading pleasure (it will vary for you post-by-post): 4/24/2009 12:34:48 PMjuvenile: fuck house shows that charge money;we are the brokest city foolz 4/24/2009 12:38:24 PMpc-pdx: Everybody else is broke too, like touring bands that are traveling around the country spending gas money and eating fooods.. You should never be turned away for lack of funds - but please remember that we need to support those touring bands so scrounge all you can! 4/24/2009 1:52:00 PMfuck that: fuck houses that dont give all the money to bands. unless a window gets broke. or its a benefit. your punk dollars go to punk bands to get to the next punk show. ask your mom for a bigger allowance, or start drinking cheaper beer.;fucking lackasses. 4/24/2009 3:04:00 PMNathan Backous: People that do house shows don't charge money because its fun or to make profit, they do it so they can pass the money on to the touring bands that have to fill their tanks with gas (gas stations don't donate it). If you like seeing bands, be prepared to trade some cash for it.

Best Band PDX 2009 Poll - we fixed our mistake

As i'm sure everybody knows, We're hosting the Best Band PDX 2009 poll on the Show-Guide.. Our friend MIKE informed us that when you hit the [Enter] key on the keyboard after typing in a band - the #1 band gets a vote rather than the band that was manually typed in... That means that The Closet Monsters' vote count is unnaturally high and they didn't really get as many votes as are now counted.. We've thought about the best way to handle this and consulted some good people to help figure this one out.. What we've decided to do is to NOT start the survey over but rather delete the bad count for The Closet Monsters.

The shows will stop at the 3535, but the house may again see old tennants as John Brainard is back in town to possibly open up a coffee shop or hostel... (?)The last show will probably be the Resistance Fest Northwest day #4 show on Sunday, July 12th.

It was inevitable, as most loss is, but it is no less heartbreaking. 17 months after The Coop took over for Brainstains, there will no longer be shows at that address that's been repeated so many times over the last few years: 3535 N.. House Show Rules #2: Bringing Common Sense

I had intended to post this as a comment following the "House Show Rules #1: No Jerks!" blogpost, but then it sorta became an essay.. Boom Boom Kid @ the Sea Shanty, 2007.. As someone who's thrown a few hundred shows in houses over the last decade and a half, I gotta say that house-show hosts must be aware of the risks of turning their home into a public space, such as cops, assholes, theft, electrical fire, damage to walls and floors, giant messes to clean up, and even violence.. The solution is not so simple as complaining about jerks on a corner of the internet (such as here!) which will go unchecked by likely every such jerk who needs to check their attitude. The solution surely begins with considering what risks are associated with each show before you even confirm it.

FAQ / WTF?! : Tags and Band Bios explained

Hi Hi,The Band Bios and Tags are awesome and are a huge step forward in the coolness and usefulness of this site.. They are also, on occasion, the source of some WTF?! confusion:"Why is my show tagged 'dubstep'?. I'm not dubtep or reggae!""The listing for my band shows the wrong bio - what's up?"Let it be known that we don't actually host any of the band bios or tags at this moment in time.. All of the band bios come from user submitted data from Last.Fm.

FAQ/WTF?! : How to Get Your Band Listed and Post a New Bio

Most of the bands listed correctly will have Bios attached to them but there are a number of bands out there that don't yet have these posted.. If you're looking to get a bio posted for your band, there's a trick to it:All of the Bios come from Last.Fm.The way last.fm works is through a thing called "scrobbling".Scrobbling works by installing a program on your computer that catalogs and tracks what you listen to - all this info goes back to the Last.fm database.. It's really neat and gives you fun facts and stats on your listening habbits. The way a band begins to exist in the system is by somebody listening to it.As far as i know, there's no way to manually enter in a new band to the system : it HAS to be be scrobbled meaning you have to listen to it.Even if your band doesn't have any music recorded, Don't worry - it's not a problem, just get clever:Just throw on an ABBA tune (you know you have it) after renaming the band "ABBA" to whatever your band name is ("Tijuana Poop Smugglers" ?).Listen to the song and make sure it's 'scrobbled'.This will get the band name into the system. - note that it won't show up immediately, it may take a few hours or more.. You will then be able to add and edit the Bio and it will show up on pc-pdx anytime anybody hovers on it or checks out your band page.

The Show Guide is an integral part of our burgeoning do-it-together musical community, one that has helped us as musicians an infinite amount since its inception.. Bands, coffee, cute girls running an art gallery that doesn't suck (really -it doesn't suck!), a half-pipe(?!),I grew up in small towns(s) midwest and if we weren't getting kicked out of wall-mart (the intercom is [*]+[0]+[3] by-the-way), we were sitting at Denny's, chain smoking, drinking coffee and talking about opening up the coolest place in the universe...some sort of punk rock coffee shop with half-pipes and all of our favorite bands.. It's gloomy portland winter time now which means more time doing inside projects.. Project like updating the Show Guide.I know the guide isn't perfect - that there are a few things that should work better, there are a few things that need to be put into place to make membership better.So-What are your top things you want to see.. I'm dead serious the things you guys post are the only way that things change or get built 'round here so ask/post on what you want to see. Please leave a comment with a few updates you would like to see happen.. For example, we just got this in an email and are working on it (what do you think?)"As for the calendar, i was thinking you could add a big (big enough to fit some words) calendar with show info on it so you can get a more visual representation of your music plans for the month. like in each day box it'd have who's playing and where and when and how much, like a monthly planner kind of thing."The show-guide is about community and we want your feedback as a community on what is going to make the guide better for you.

Our Tech - the past, present and future of pc-pdx

"Anyone know what CMS this site is based off of?"This site is 100% custom freshness! It started in 2007 as a hardcoded mess - i literally updated the show listings by hand every night at midnight to remove the old shows.Jan 1st 2008 saw version #2 where we actually got a database and pc-pdx started becoming a real website, the wiki format that it is today - rather than a static mess.~July 2009 came version #3, the Red + Black version where the site really started to take off.. The site started to become more user friendly - we had some hits and misses with features..(membership like features were a HUGE failure) It started getting really slow and cumbersome towards the end of its run because i learned to code along with this site and it hasn't always been the highest preforming, scalable implementation.July 5th 2010 - this current version breached the septic internet womb and came into fruition.. A lot of cool new features were added but now that it's so many months later, i see a lot of places for improvement.. You guys might have seen the "Ohhh shit!

Bad Times' Best New Bands of 2011

The Willamette Week recently put out their annual “Best New Bands” issue, which featured a hodgepodge of Portland’s most power-washed music.. As a friend of mine said, seeing that list makes me feel like I don’t care about local music.. Perhaps we truly are “underground.” Below is my obligatory response list, accumulated from attending numerous house shows and parties.. I have to say Drunk Dad gets props for having one of the rowdiest followings in town, while Sexhair is probably the purist Portland punk band since Moral Panic broke up.This year started out rather rough so something needs to be said for the houses that hosted shows.

    TOP-10 SHOWS @ THE KNOW in 2011

On the eve of a new year, I thought it would be fun to get in on the “year-in-review” things that many people/publications/media-outlets do.. PC-PDX has always been a huge supporter of our endeavors at The Know, and what better forum to share this retrospective look at 2011.In chronological order:04.01 - FROM ASHES RISE / NUX VOMICA / TRAUMAThis line-up was so ridiculous that some people on message boards had concluded that our listing was an “April fools” joke...it wasn’t, and the show went down with hundreds of people cramming into our humble venue-area to catch a glimpse of Portland’s finest d-beat crushers. 06.10 - BASEMENT ANIMAL / VILE GASH (OH) / NUKKEHAMMER (OH) / SOCIETY NURSE (WA)Rarely are we able to accommodate a slew of touring-acts that can hold their own with minimal local-support.. But when you’ve got the nastiest sonic-pummeling from crew of Ohioans, and a venerable/touted neighbor from the north, support becomes less of an issue!. Not to mention what would be the final assault from Portland’s very own grind-punks, Basement Animal.06.18 - SLOWMOTIONS (JP) / CRAZY SPIRIT (NY) / ORIGIN OF M (JP) June was the month of unbelievable touring acts playing our stage.

Event organizers have a parade planned, a punk rock spelling bee, the world's biggest game of knockout (you know, that schoolyard basketball game!), and a whole shit ton of amazing DIY bands that have never had their music used in a Gap commercial or Navy advertisement. After paying the venues and giving the touring bands some gas money, all proceeds are going to local charities and non-profits.

WE'RE FIVE YEARS OLD! -a screenshot retrospective

The Show-Guide at this point, as we've been told by many (thanks!), is the tip top kaleidoscope of cool as far as any diy show listing site goes.. It is an open-to-anybody wiki where you can post and edit any show to keep everybody up to date on the cool shit that happens here in pdx.. Back in 2007 there was not any central place to find and talk about shows or to keep everybody updated on last minute changes : just bands with myspace pages furiously sending out bulletins at 5pm saying that the 8'oclock show had to move houses across town or whatever and that just want awesome. We created the show-guide wiki, as it stands now, over the last five years.. I got nostalgic a few days back and decided to hit Archive.org to go through some of their screenshots of the various site styles through the years.

The Know Presents: MEMORIAL WEEK (because a day is not enough)

So…there are many music “festivals” and whatnot during Memorial Day weekend (and a boat-load of bands that hit the road in relation to said festivals/with the on-set of spring). as result, we have cleverly/effectively ridden on the coat-tails of these festivals/tours and are proud to present the most awesome 7 consecutive-days of music (without resorting to festival “test of endurance”/”epic” line-ups…i.e. 10+ bands on a single-day), which we have deemed:The Know’s MEMORIAL WEEK (because a day is not enough) SHOW SERIESalso, of important note (READ): several of the shows listed will require us to monitor the capacity of our venue/bar area (for everyone’s sake), and we’ll be using the same style of “restricted-entry” that was employed over our 7th Anniversary-Week for the Tragedy/From Ashes Rise/Bi-Marks show. if you are not familiar with how this worked, the amendments to our standard cover/entry to our shows are listed below:- remove our cover-charge “cap” (of $5) in favor of an appropriate alternative…somewhere in the range of $7-10- we close our bar at 7pm and clear out extraneous furniture and what-have-you to create more standing-room/viewing ability for the presumably larger crowd.- we re-open at 8pm and charge entry/stamp hands at our front entrance (instead of the curtained entrance to the venue area…our venue is adjacent to our bar-room/separated by a wall and curtain. the curtain remains open during these shows). the stamps allow for attendees come-and-go out of our space for a smoke/phone call/etc and then be re-admitted to the show.- our front door-person will be running a ‘counter’ and will restrict entry once our capacity is reached. at this point we’ll revert to a one-in/one-out system that is up to the discretion of our front door staff.- we often do not allow drinks at our side-walk tables during “special scenarios,” as we must keep the sidewalk passable for pedestrian traffic/only have the space to allow the anticipated number of smokers at our tables without causing disruption for passer-by. this is also up to the discretion of our front door staff (who are unbelievably amiable/looking out for the best interest of the show…so please work with them).- we’ll run a video-feed of the performances to our barroom tv’s so that people can still see the show in the event that they want leave the venue area (ex – they’re tired from standing/feeling too cramped/need another drink/etc)long and short is…during “special scenarios” we try to maximize the level of comfort and stage visibility for the show-goers/provide greater compensation to the performer(s) while also being particularly sensitive/not causing disruption to our neighborhood. our barroom and venue area will be utilized as ”one room” for the duration of the show (versus being separate entities). i.e. regular patrons/curious passerby/etc are not admitted to any part of our establishment during the show run-time without paying the cover…this allows for the greatest number of people who actually want to see the show/are invested in the bands/music to attend!

Where are the Band Bios? - Bios are having issues!

Hey everybody!Last.fm is where we currently get the band bios and it appears that their servers have been going through some funky patches lately.A few weeks back, we noticed that some band pages were taking something on order of a full minute or two for loading.. SUCKASS!We responding with "ohfuck, we gotta do something about that" so we created a new data access call that will abort after 2 seconds of no response.. If that happens, it means that you will see a band page with NO bio.. The bios might come back intermittently or they might be out for a while... it's all up to last.fm at the moment. We figured that it was more important for you guys to be able to surf through bands links, or whatevs you're doing, and find the shows quickly - rather than waiting for who knows how long for the bios to load.(for the nerds: i realize there should be a note on the page saying that a timeout happened and those bios are temp unavailable, but our shitty old code doesn't easily allow for that right now.

The Shape of Punk to Come is one of the best, most solid albums ever released and it never got the justice it deserved with the bands sudden breakup. -That was 15 years ago though.. What if i did actually see this show and it sucked?. I don't know if i could handle that.

Slabtown getting spruced up & all ages

Been hanging out at SLABTOWN in NW PDX planning a party (10/27 @ Slabtown!) and am really impressed how the new owner, Doug, is making that place SHINE!! It was always a cool space, but hard to get good dynamics due to the low ceilings and concrete everywhere - 'twas WALL OF RACKET - THIS IS ALL CHANGING.. The stage area acoustics have been adjusted, and the stage has been spruced up and looks good (if you will recall, it used to be a shithole). Furthermore, the kitchen and food look great too - in a nod to SATYRICON'S FELLINI/EAT OR DIE there is a decided Greek/Middle Eastern slant (pita bread, hummus, salads etc), and they offer hand-cut fries as well.. Cheap and vegan-friendly.. Here is the kicker: Starting in November, they are preparing to do ALL AGES shows!

Take Five: missing a jazz-great, podcasting with pdx-great Arya Imig

It was over five years ago that i met the poppa of the Portland scene, Arya Imig.. It was at a show, of course, in the dmug basement that sparked it.. Since then, i think we've done some cool things together.. One of my favorites is this podcast from the fall of 2007.

SAVE BACKSPACE! throw down for a bad ass ALL-AGES venue.

we jacked the following from http://www.indiegogo.com/savebackspace and suggest that you go there and make a donation or, if you personally can't, tell a friend who can afford to make a donation and save one of portlands last ALL-AGES music venues and all-around baddass space!Backspace is in Trouble.Regardless of the role Backspace plays, and that Backspace would like to continue to give to the people of Portland, we have basically been told by the landlord that if we can't come up with $10,000, by the 1st of January, that we will be thrown out.. This means we would no longer be able to play a pivotal role in being a community space for the people of Portland.. We wouldn't be able to house benefits for local non-profits.. We wouldn't be able to give bands an all-ages venue to play in.

    East End Update

--via dBMonkey + East End:East End wants to apologize for the silence since the fire.. We have been waiting for circumstances beyond our control to figure out the future.. We still do not have enough information to know when, or even if, we can open again.. We are still waiting on the city to tell the landlord what the Osborn building needs to make it safe for the public.
